Kenyan Muslims Shield Christians In Mandera Bus Attack

A group of Kenyan Muslims travelling on a bus ambushed by Islamist gunmen protected Christian passengers by refusing to be split into groups, according to eyewitnesses.

At least two people were killed when suspected al-Shabab militants targeted the bus close to the north-eastern village of El Wak on the Somali border.

The bus was travelling from the capital Nairobi to the town of Mandera.

No group has said it carried out the attack.

Al-Shabab has been at war with Kenya ever since Kenyan forces entered Somalia in October 2011 in an effort to crush the militants.

Facebook Turns Away From Flash For Video

Facebook has stopped using Adobe’s Flash technology to show video across the entire social network.

Instead Facebook has developed a video player built around the widely used HTML5 technology.

Games on Facebook would still use Flash, it said, but it was looking into ways to change those too.

The site is one among many that have turned away from Flash. Many see it as a security problem because bugs in it are often exploited by cyber thieves.

Daniel Baulig, a front-end developer at Facebook, said the switch to HTML5 had helped the firm speed up the development of its video-handling system. HTML is the basic computer language underpinning the web.

In addition, he said, the HTML5 video player worked much better with accessibility tools such as screen readers that are used by people who do not see well.

Mr Baulig said it introduced the HTML5 player a while ago for a small number of Facebook members who kept their web browsers up-to-date. It did not launch all at once with HTML5 because testing revealed problems with the new player.

“We noticed that a lot of the older browsers would simply perform worse using the HTML5 player than they had with the old Flash player,” he said. “We saw more errors, longer loading times, and a generally worse experience.”

Facebook ran HTML5 and a Flash-based video player in parallel while it ironed out bugs. Now, the stability of the new video player has persuaded the social network to roll it out by default.

YouTube switched to a HTML5 based player in January 2015 and in September the BBC released an HTML5 version of its iPlayer catch-up TV service. Many other sites now offer alternatives to Adobe’s technology.

I Never Posted A ‘Photoshoped’ Photo – Anamoah

Former TV3 news anchor and presenter, Nana Aba Anamoah, has denied ever posting a ‘Photoshoped’ picture on social media.

Nana Aba was mocked a few months ago over allegations of photo theft after it emerged that pictures she allegedly posted online of her at a Manchester United game were fake.

But speaking in an interview with Bola Ray on Starr Chat Wednesday, the TV personality said she did no such thing.

“I never ever posted a Photoshoped photo. I don’t even know how to Photoshop.”

She said she didn’t have to Photoshop a picture from Old Trafford if she needed to prove she goes to watch matches there.

“I go to Old Trafford whenever I feel like it. I get free tickets to go watch a match.”

The station, taking the allegations seriously suspended her after days of massive public backlash against the outspoken presenter following her alleged involvement in an “online information and photo theft”.

In a statement Saturday, TV3 said: “After preliminary investigations internally, and in accordance with TV3’s own commitment to the highest level of professionalism, Management has decided to take Nana Aba Anamoah off air until further notice.

“As a broadcast network that prides itself in upholding high ethical standards and delivering credible and trustworthy content to its viewers, TV3 would like to assure viewers and other key stakeholders that it shall continue to take all necessary steps to maintain such standards.”

“We expect guardians of our brand particularly employees who we entrust to deliver content on air to our viewers, to ascribe to the company’s values whatever they are.”

The statement added: “TV3 is committed to deliver on its promise of being the First in News and Best in Entertainment”.

But Anamoah said she was “disappointed as a human being” at the decision they made.

“The disappointment is the way my employers handled it” she told Bola.

But she said she would never bear the Network any grudges as a result of what happened.

“I love TV3, I will always love TV3. TV3 gave me an opportunity no media house in Ghana would give me.”

Kim Kardashian To Launch A New Range Of Emojis

Kim Kardashian is launching her own range of emojis.

The reality TV star gave fans an early Christmas present on Instagram.

At some point Kim is going to bless us with Kimoji, brand new emojis that are all about her.

Her famous, internet-breaking rear, a hand taking a selfie, a pregnant Kim and her cry-face are just some of the delights we can expect.

If you prefer your emojis less Kim-centric, there’s a hairdryer, a variation on the nail varnish emoji and what looks like an Air Yeezy.

We imagine the BASIC, LIT, and red plastic cup ones popping up quite a bit on social media.

The Kimoji app rolls out tomorrow. It’s gonna be ‘a peach with cream slobbered on top of it’. Or something.

Kim recently welcomed her second child, a son called Saint, with rapper Kanye West.

The 35-year-old revealed on her website that she plans to eat her placenta like she did after her daughter North was born.

She explained: ‘I had great results and felt so full of energy and didn’t have any signs of depression. ‘Every time I take a pill, I feel a surge of energy and feel really healthy and good.’

WAEC Releases 2015 Nov/Dec Results; Withholds 970

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has released provisional results for the November/December 2015 West African Senior School Certification Examination (WASSCE).

A statement from WAEC signed by Mrs Agnes Teye Cudjoe, Deputy Director of Public Affairs said the results of 970 candidates alleged to have been involved in various examination malpractices have been withheld pending conclusion of investigations into the cases of malpractices.

In all a total of 143,116 candidates took part in the examination.

According to WAEC the withheld results would be released as soon as the Council concludes its investigations. Candidates may access their results online at www.waecgh.org.

The statement cautioned members of the public to be wary of the activities of fraudsters who contact candidates with the promises of bettering their results for a fee payable through mobile money transfers.

“The sole aim of these swindlers is to make money from their victims by deceit”

“The Council wishes to assure members of the public that its results database is well secured. As such, all forged results can be detected by its confirmation/verification system.

Institutions and organisations are advised to confirm or verify results presented to them directly from the Council or access the confirmation/verification service online at the WAEC website,” it said.

Meet Selena Gomez’s Very Cinematic, Twisty ‘Hands to Myself’ Music

Selena Gomez has unveiled her sultry new video for “Hands to Myself,” the latest single off the singer’s new LP Revival.

“Hands to Myself” finds Gomez in the role of an actor’s crazy ex as she roams through her former flame’s penthouse apartment while he’s out, rummaging through his closet and watching his television until she finally passes out in his bed.

When her ex comes home and realizes something’s amiss, the police are called and the stalking Gomez is arrested… only for the camera to zoom out and reveal that the “Hands to Myself” action was a movie starring her and her man, and the two are actually happily together in (the video’s) reality.

“Sorry for snooping, Chris,” Gomez tweeted after the video dropped, referring to her video boyfriend, model Christopher Mason.

Lawyer Sued Lil Wayne Over Unpaid Legal Bills

Lil Wayne is reportedly being sued by his former lawyer over unpaid legal bills.

Michael Kramer represented Wayne in his efforts to be released from his Cash Money Records contract and on Monday (Dec. 21) filed a lawsuit against his former client in the Manhattan federal court for failing to pay $375,239 in fees.

Wayne agreed to pay Kramer $20,000 as an initial retainer and then subsequent monthly bills in July 2013, according to Kramer’s suit, but the rapper allegedly failed to pay those bills.

Kramer’s law firm billed Wayne unsuccessfully from November 2014 to October 2015 and finally dropped him as a client due to the outstanding debt.

Kramer claims in the lawsuit he “made numerous attempts to resolve the dispute amicably. These attempts were ultimately unsuccessful.” Wayne was sued in October by another law firm — Garbett, Allen and Roza — for $80,000 in unpaid legal fees. That firm was representing Wayne in a lawsuit against him from private jet leasing company the Signature Group, to whom he was ordered to pay $2 million in missing payments.

See New Face Of Tokyo Olympic Stadium

A new, more scaled-down, design has been chosen for the main stadium at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Spiralling costs had forced the scrapping of renowned architect Zaha Hadid’s futuristic original design.

The new design, by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, will cost 149bn yen ($1.2bn; £825m) to build.

Ms Hadid’s plan would have cost 252bn yen, making it the world’s most expensive sports venue.

Mr Kuma’s design will cost an additional 4bn yen to design and maintain.

Compared to a spaceship and with a price tag to match, Ms Hadid’s design would have been the costliest ever built

Toyo Ito’s rival design, would also have had a more subtle impact on the skyline and the city’s budget

The scrapping of the design caused a row that eventually led to the resignation of Japan’s Education and Sports Minister Hakubun Shimomura in October.

Mr Kuma’s design echoes Japanese temple styles, with a low-lying steel and wood structure, surrounded by trees. It will sit more than 20 metres lower than the previous design and supporters say it fits better with its immediate environment, which includes the greenery around the nearby Meiji Shrine.

“I think this is a wonderful plan that meets criteria such as basic principles, construction period and cost,” Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said when he announced the choice.

Tweeting before the winner was chosen, one Twitter user complained the designs would still cost several times more than other major stadia in Japan – even the “unprecedented” Osaka Dome

Work on the site will have to proceed quickly if Tokyo is to make its self-imposed deadline of November 2019

Japan’s Taisei Corp will lead construction of the new design.

It beat a rival proposal by architect Toyo Ito. That too was simpler than Ms Hadid’s proposal, which was compared with a gigantic bicycle helmet or an oyster, and which would have taken up a much larger area – 78,100 sq m (840,660 sq ft) against 72,400 sq m for Kengo Kuma’s concept.

Construction or the new design will also be quicker. Necessarily so when the International Olympic Committee deadline for completion is January 2020, ahead of the Games’ start in July that year.

The new winning design has also attracted colourful comparisons, with some saying it looks like a stack of pancakes, or a hamburger.

Sixty-eight thousand spectators will pack the stadium, though that can be expanded to 80,000 after the Olympics, if needed. The old design had a capacity of 80,000 from the start and was expected to host the final of the Rugby World Cup in 2019.

The new stadium will not be built in time to host that event.
