Winchester University Academy Trust to sponsor new school being built in Eastleigh

A NEW primary school in Eastleigh is to be sponsored by University of Winchester Academy Trust.

Proposals for Hampshire County Council to design and build a brand new £6 million pound school in Chestnut Avenue have been brought a step closer following the announcement that the trust will be the new school’s academy sponsor.

The trust is also the sponsor of the new Barton Farm Academy primary school, set to serve the new Kings Barton development.

Hampshire County Council’s executive member for education, councillor Peter Edgar, said: “With demand for school places set to rise in Eastleigh, owing to the new housing development in the area of Chestnut Avenue, we have been planning for some time a new primary school to serve the development.

“I am pleased to hear that the University of Winchester Academy Trust has been named as the sponsor, and look forward to continuing our excellent working relationship with university colleagues.”

Professor Joy Carter, vice-chancellor of the University of Winchester and chairwoman of the University of Winchester Academy Trust, said: “We are delighted to be named as sponsor for the new school and look forward to working in partnership with Hampshire County Council and the local community to bring our distinctive values-driven educational ethos to Eastleigh.

“Our vision is for a school which will offer inspirational learning experiences for all children and nurture a lifelong love of learning and the ambition to achieve their potential.”

The new school, for children aged 4 to 11, will be designed to encourage community use, with a learning resource area at the heart of the plan.

It will serve the new housing development at North Stoneham Park, a 62-hectare site identified in Eastleigh Borough Council’s Local Plan 2011-29 as a strategic location for development.

The site is being developed by Highwood Group Ltd and will include 1,100 new homes, accommodation for the elderly, community facilities and landscaped public spaces, as well as the new primary school.

Hampshire County Council will design the new school and manage the building project.

The school site is set to be handed over in spring 2019, with the opening set for September 2020.

Law School experience; Lady Set To Be Called To Bar says "If law is so simple, go study it "

A lady who is set to be called to Bar tomorrow in Abuja, has recounted her experience at the Nigerian Law School. According to Chukwuba Chiluba, some of her colleagues at the Nigerian Law school, Lagos campus didn’t make it due to the death, madness and other reasons. Read what she shared on Facebook below;
Nigerian Law School especially Lagos campus is the toughest campus . If you want stress ,go there. We sit in class from 9-5pm. Sometimes we don’t get to leave class till 6 or 7pm just because we want to learn ! After which we must hold group meetings for presentation the next day. And the cycle continues.
.
People faint in class or even drop out because they couldn’t cope. A man lost his child but had to sit for the compulsory law dinner , I couldn’t imagine the pain he went through.

A particular set had a woman who went into labour in the examination hall, she had to finish her exam in the ward , law school pities no one !
Some even ran mad .While we lost others to the cold hands of death.

At one point I broke down, I became sick and pale . Adaobi Chinazom Eze came to visit me on campus and I begged her to take me with her , I didn’t mind tagging along . She promised to come pick me and she didn’t. I really take it as an insult when people make fun of lawyers in Nigeria, truth is there might not be all that glamour but my dear it isn’t easy !

I also find it offensive when people make fun of those who didn’t pass law school, some of you would be lost in civil litigation class and would come out insane. Before you force your child to study law , please ask him/her if that is what they want ,because it isn’t easy .

Six years of learning, Is not easy. And for those of us who didn’t study in private universities you can remember our “university strike ” experience which put our education on hold , we would have graduated a long time ago. I graduated since 2015 , but didn’t go to law school because this.
.
If law is so simple, go study it , I hope you have the money and intelligence to facilitate this ambition, it’s not easy, so when you hear or say lawyers are proud , we accept ! It’s not a career or course for the fickle minded or the “basic”…
.
And even as a female in the legal world , there is this disgusting stereotype that we tend to be jezebels , who no man would want , well if no man wants us , money wants us ,who cares !

Today I celebrate my girls.
.
Congratulations to us .

Cab Driver Returns Lost Laptop, N50K, ATM Cards And Other Items To Professor In Kogi. Photos

The provost, College of Medicine at the Kogi State University, Prof. Margaret Olabisi Araoye, has narrated how a cab driver, Abubakar Hassan returned her lost bag which contained her laptop, bundle of N50,000, ATM cards, pair of golden earrings among other items – after she misplaced it in his cab…
Read the full details below;

“‘On my way from Anyigba to Abuja by commercial transport, I had to alight at Giri junction, to pick a cab that was to link me with another cab to my destination. I had a heavy suitcase and a bag. When we got to Lugbe, the cab driver hurriedly dropped me off when he saw a cab going to my final destination. In the process of dragging the heavy suitcase, and in the usually chaotic motor park, I forgot to pick my bag.

As I approached the hotel in Jabi, now feeling relaxed, I remembered my bag which contained the following items:

1. Laptop
2. A bundle of N50,000, and a cheque
3. A pair of golden earrings
4. My International Passport
5. Power bank, ATM cards, Driver’s license, etc.

I went back to Giri junction to report to the NURTW officials. That was when I discovered that many drivers operated as freelancers and might not be traceable. I became desperate. I exchanged contact numbers with the NURTW official and went back to the hotel. I couldn’t really concentrate on the assignment I came to Abuja for.

I’d not informed my husband. The cab driver searched my bag, extracted my husband’s mobile number from my driver’s license and called him.

My husband mistook him for a fraudster and told him off. I later informed my husband and he gave me the driver’s number. I called him. Alas! He had my bag. He had even attempted to reach me on Facebook.

I got my colleagues Clara and Moses to speak Hausa with him and we arranged to meet at the hotel two days later, when he returned from a trip. He emerged at the hotel with the bag and the contents intact!

Despite the rot, decadence and economic hardship in our land, there still exist millions of people like Abubakar Hassan (08027164473)with good morals. Please appreciate him with me”‘.

ASUP Strike: Union suspends 15-day old nationwide strike

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has suspended its nationwide strike 15 days after the industrial action began.

Usman Duste, the National President of ASUP made the announcement today during the union’s 14th National Delegates Conference at the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic, Bauchi state. He said the decision to suspend the strike followed the series of meetings held between the leadership of the union and the Federal Government.
According to him, both parties agreed to a Memorandum of Settlement and Action (MoS) on each of the issues raised by the union. “The union considered the suspension to give an opportunity for implementation of the content of Memorandum of Settlement and Action, and shall be reviewed according to the timelines outlined in the MoS,” Duste said.

The decision to commence an indefinite strike was the outcome of the National Executive Council meeting of ASUP which held on November 11 at the Kaduna Polytechnic, Kaduna State. According to the union, the industrial action followed the failure of the Federal Government to implement all the agreements it entered with them since 2016. Some of the demands included non-implementation of the NEEDS Assessment Report and shortfalls in personnel releases and withdrawal of allowances.

Others were non-passage of the amended bill of the Polytechnic Act, alleged infractions in the appointment of rectors, as well as improving the conditions of state-owned institutions among other issues. The union had lamented that despite the long period given to the government to address some of the issues it had raised, government did not consider it necessary to address the demands for improved funding of polytechnic education in the country.

Dutse had also told reporters after the Council meeting that ASUP had given government sufficient time to implement all the agreements, saying they had no choice than to embark on an indefinite strike after the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum issued earlier.

“On October 24, a reconciliation meeting was convened by the Federal Ministry of Labour in Abuja. The ministry in the eye of the storm, the Federal Ministry of Education, was poorly represented that no memorandum of action was agreed on. “This clearly shows the level of disdain and disrespect with which the issues of the sector are being handled by the relevant agencies. In view of the above, our union resolved in its emergency meeting of NEC on October 31, 2017 to commence an indefinite and comprehensive strike effective from November 13, 2017,” he had said.

Osinbajo celebrates Pastors Olukoya as the first to clone genes and E .A Adeboye

The General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Enoch Adeboye, is the first Nigerian to acquire a Ph.d Degree in Applied Mathematics from a Nigerian University, according to Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

Mr. Osinbajo said this at the 2017 distinguished alumni awards and celebration of University of Lagos at 55 which held at Oriental Hotel, Lagos on Friday.

Apart from Mr. Adeboye, the Vice president also said the pastor and founder of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministry, Daniel Olukoya, was the first to clone genes.

“I want to say that UNILAG has proved time and time again to be not just a university of first-choice but also the university of firsts!
“So many firsts in different areas; just reading about Doctor Olukoya, he was the first to clone genes. Hardly anyone would know that the pastor and founder of Mountain of Fire and Miracles was also the first to clone genes. That is an absolutely outstanding thing.

“The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God was also the first Nigerian to get a PhD in a Nigerian university in Applied Mathematics,” he said.

Mr. Osinbajo, who was a professor of law at the University, expressed his delight at being at the occasion, which, he said, afforded him the opportunity to “enjoy the company of many who have either been colleagues or seniors in the same university”.

He also said “it is not often that one gets to celebrate the 55th anniversary of a great institution”.

The vice president said there are so many other firsts in Unilag, adding, “but the most important thing today is to ensure that those firsts do not become the last.

“We must ensure we continue in the great traditions of the University of Lagos and this is why I am so excited to see a lot of committed alumni who want to see to it that our University goes from glory to glory”.

Mr. Osinbajo also said the government alone cannot support universities to the extent that is required, to keep them even at the current levels.
“A lot will have to come from the Alumni and the private sector. That’s how great universities all over the world are run.
“I am so excited to see that our fund raising project is one that has clearly shown the way to go with respect to developing our University,” he said.

The vice president congratulated those who were given awards at the ceremony.
He also prayed that all those present will also be around when the university continues to celebrate milestones.

ASUU Strike: FG Begins Payment Of University Lecturers' Salary Arrears

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, has disclosed that the Federal Government has begun the payment of salary arrears of the striking university teachers.

But the lecturers, under the aegis of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) insisted that the Federal Government must remit N200 billion into the universities’ revitalisation fund before the ongoing strike can be suspended.
ASUU leaders, who came to the negotiation table with a former President of the union, Prof. Assisi Asobie and President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Abuba Wabba, explained that the payment of their salary arrears without getting a commitment to the payment of the N200 billion for the rehabilitation of the universities would portray the union as being only concerned with the welfare of its members and not the general improvement of the teaching conditions in the institutions.

Issues in contention include the registration of Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company (NUPEMCO); fractionalization of salaries in federal universities and gross under-funding/non-funding of state universities and arrears and the implementation of earned academic allowance; and the non-release of funds for the revitalisation of public universities as spelt out in the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding.

Other issues are guidelines for the retirement benefits of professors in line with the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreement; Treasury Single Account (TSA), etc.

Graduate From Nigeria Universities Are not Intellect Enough to Withstand Student From My University

Former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has described graduates of Nigerian public universities as brainless, saying they cannot communicate in English with the students of his private secondary school, the American University of Nigeria (AUN) Academy.

Abubakar, who spoke on Thursday evening in Yola during his birthday celebration organized by the management of AUN, said public universities graduates cannot fit into private industries due to their poor education and character.
“I was in the University of Zik in Akwa in Anambra State on Wednesday on the invitation of the university. There is no student in public universities that can speak English in an error-free manner like the head boy of my secondary, who just finished addressing us now.
“When the head boy of AUN Academy, Abdullahi Sani, started speaking, I was thinking it is one of the lecturers in AUN, but only for him to introduce himself as the head boy of AUN Academy,” he stated.

Atiku said his ambition to establish AUN was to ensure that Nigeria produced graduates of high quality, both in learning and character, at an affordable rate and avoid the stress of traveling to other countries in search of quality education.

He pointed out that only quality education could bring about technology development in any country in the world, not oil, gold or other mineral resources.

Atiku noted that a country that places emphasis on oil, instead of manpower development, is preparing to collapse, pointing out that quality education produces quality manpower that turns a country into a wealthy nation.

While addressing students of the Law Department, the former vice president restated that Nigeria would continue to move backward unless it is restructured to address the problems threatening its existing.

“When government set up the last constitutional conference, I sent my proposal to the conference and when the members received it, they all agree with the content and resolved to include it in their final report as part of their resolutions.
