After confessing to the crime the 21-year-old has now been formally charged with nine counts of murder and is expected to apply for bail this evening.
Roof has reportedly told the authorities that he wanted to start a “race war”.
CNN’s Nick Valencia says the department of justice will be conducting separate investigations.
“They are looking into whether or not he has any known ties or links to white supremacies groups, hate groups and things like that. We don’t know exactly where the case will go physically from here in terms of the courtroom proceedings. We just know that today he will appear for the first time in South Carolina, he was extradited from North Carolina yesterday after being captured about four hours from here in a small town.”
t’s now believed that Roof bought the .45 caliber handgun originally said to have been given to him by his father despite Roof having a criminal record.
It’s not clear whether he used this weapon in the shooting as investigations continue.
Speaking at a gathering for US troops in Italy a short while ago first lady Michelle Obama has described it as a horrifying and senseless crime.
“My heart goes out to the people of Emmanuel Church and the people of Charleston. I pray for a community that I know is in pain with the hope that tragedies like this will one day come to an end.”
US President Barack Obama on Thursday said he was outraged, angered and saddened by the mass shooting.
In a live television address, he called the massacre a tragedy and spoke of the history and value of the Emmanuel African Methodist Church during the civil rights movement.
Witnesses said Roof stood up and announced he was there “to shoot black people” before he opened fire.
