BREAKING NEWS!!! Brazilian first female President Dilma Rousseff impeached for breaking budget laws

Brazil's suspended President Dilma Rousseff was impeached today Wednesday August 31 following a 61-20 vote by the country’s senate.

Senators broke into protest, cheers and applause after the electronic voting, which went on for hours, was announced. Pro-impeachment senators burst into a rendering of the national anthem, some waving Brazilian flags, while allies of Rousseff stood stony face.

"I will not associate my name to this infamy," read a sign held up by one senator.

68-year-old Rousseff, the country's first female president, will be removed from office and replaced by Vice President Michel Temer, 75. He will be sworn in on Wednesday to serve out her term which extends through 2018.

The impeachment comes two days after Rousseff staged an impassioned defense of her actions on Monday and insisted she was innocent of any wrongdoing in an lengthy speech before the senate. Lawmakers had charged that she breached fiscal rules in an attempt to cover up the nation’s budget woes.
"I know I will be judged, but my conscience is clear. I did not commit a crime," Rousseff, told senators on Monday. "I can’t help but taste the bitterness of injustice."

Rousseff described the impeachment process, which has been going on for about a year, amounted to an illegal coup.  She said the move was aimed at protecting the interests of the country's economic elite and rolling back social programs that lifted millions of Brazilians from poverty during the last decade.

Recalling how she was tortured and imprisoned in the 1970s for belonging to a leftist guerrilla group, Rousseff urged senators to "vote against impeachment, vote for democracy. Do not accept a coup.
Her opponents, however, have hailed the chance to turn the page on a drawn-out political crisis, the country's worst recession and a sweeping corruption scandal at state oil company Petrobras.

About 50 leftist demonstrators gathered outside the presidential palace to show their support.

"We are protesting against the coup and fighting for democracy," said 61-year-old farmer Orlando Ribeiro.

In the center of the capital, extra security and the closing of avenues near the Senate caused massive traffic jams. Police said they were preparing for large protests later in the day.

Lawyers presenting closing arguments could not hold back their emotions as the clock wound down on a crisis that has paralyzed Brazilian politics for months. A lead lawyer for the case against Rousseff, Senator Janaina Paschoal, wept as she asked forgiveness for causing the president "suffering," but insisted it was the right thing to do.

"The Brazilian people must be aware that nothing illegal and illegitimate is being done here," she said.

Rousseff's counsel, veteran lawyer Jose Eduardo Cardozo, retorted that the charges were trumped up to punish the president's support for a huge corruption investigation that has snared many of Brazil's elite.

"This is a farce," he said in a speech during which his voice alternated between shouts and near whispers. We should ask her forgiveness if she is convicted," he added. "History will treat her fairly. History will absolve Dilma Rousseff if you convict her."

Cardozo said shhe would appeal the impeachment through the Supreme Court. Rousseff is the first Brazilian leader to be dismissed from office since 1992, when Fernando Collor de Mello resigned before a final vote in his impeachment trial for corruption.

Tennis: Bristish No 1 Jo Konta collapse at the US Open, later beat Tsvetana Pironkova 6-2-5-7-6-2 (photos)

Jo Konta staged a recovery that was both miraculous and controversial from an on court collapse to survive into the third round of the US Open.

The British No 1, struggling for breath, fell into a sobbing heap on the baseline at the end of her match's second set, a victim of the acute humidity at Flushing Meadows.
But after two separate breaks she was able to continue, and ended up a 6-2 5-7 6-2 winner against unfortunate Tsvetana Pironkova, whose rhythm was disrupted by the 20-minute drama. The Bulgarian later made known her displeasure at the rules.
Urgent medical attention had been summoned as Konta, going a putrid red in the face, suffered breathing problems and physical distress as her second set reached its climax.

First the Norwegian umpire, Julie Minori Kjendlie, was left to tend to her and then the doctor and tour physio rushed out to be at her side, applying ice packs as she lay on the court, having first sunk down onto all fours.
The referee's office gave the official cause of the timeout as 'dizziness'. This is a crucial distinction from cramping, for which treatment is not allowed, as opposed to a heat-related illness, for which a medical treatment is permitted.

There was no suggestion from Pironkova that Konta was faking – she most certainly was not – but she rightly questioned the additional break after the timeout.
The drama occurred between her first and second serves as Konta faced a third set point at 5-6 in the second, having convincingly taken the first set with a sparkling display of tennis. Pironkova could only stand around as Konta told the medics that 'my whole body feels in shock'.

After an initial break of around 12 minutes she completed a double fault and then took a 'toilet' break that lasted around another seven minutes.

'What was frustrating for me was what happened after that, the toilet break,' she said. 'With that, I think the match was stopped for just too long. I had my momentum going, I was getting back in the match.

'Everything was by the rules, but today I am not very happy with these rules. I wish I could say all players use bathroom breaks accordingly, to go to the toilet. Obviously some players use them to refocus. I don't think they should be used that way.'

The problem seemed to be down to the 80 per cent humidity, because this was not the hottest day of the tournament in pure temperature terms, with the mercury showing in the mid to late twenties.

General Gown said he talked about various issues with the country including the governments efforts at fighting corruption in the country. He said:

“We discussed the general affairs of the country, the problems of the country, his fight against corruption, and all the efforts that he is making to deal with it and of course, the impatience of the public to see results of the fight which have yet to be found, since people have not been prosecuted yet, that would soon begin.

How Will You Described This Guy, Is It Proper Way Of Greeting?

The pix above illustrate way of greeting in some part of Nigeria. The young man prostrated to greet their visitor. But i become sceptic, even in the same part of the country where this way of greeting is been practiced, some children don't greet that way. Most especially those from wealthy home popularly called "agebota".

The Holy Bible says, Train up a child in the way he should go..." Maybe that is what this young man is practicing here. loz!

Ghanaian Pastor is Arrested over GH¢11.6 million fraud case and led away in handcuffs (photos)

Controversial founder of the International God's Way Church, Bishop Daniel Obinim was escorted in handcuffs and transferred to the Accra Police Headquarters after he reported himself to Tema Regional police station earlier today.

The 'Angel of God' had responded to invitation following complaints made to the police after he publicly flogged two teenage members of his church for alleged fornication and attempted abortion.

The police had given him 24 hour ultimatum to honour their invitation or they will be forced to take action against him.

A video of the man of God flogging the two with a belt went viral on social media recently, drawing widespread criticism but the Bishop defended the action insisting they deserved it for engaging in fornication and attempting an abortion.

However, there is a twist...according to Ghana media, the controversial Preacher is also being interrogated over a GH¢11.6 million fraud case. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) PRO, ASP Joseph Darkwa, said a complainant came to the Tema Police some few weeks ago to report that he gave an amount of GH¢780,000 to Okomfo Gyapata of Mampong Nkwanta near Koforidua in the Eastern Region to do a spiritual ritual to bless the money.

"According to the complainant, after some time, he realised that the Okomfo was not able to help him neither was he able to give him back his money, so he came to Bishop Obinim to report the matter so the Bishop would help him retrieve the money and do the rituals to bless the money for him," he said.

ASP Darkwa said it was based on that that Bishop Obinim asked him to bring the rest of the gold money which amounted to GH¢11.6 million belonging to the family.

The complaint told the police since he gave the money to the Bishop, he has not been able to do what he was expected to do neither was he given his money.

The complainant said he gave the money to Okomfo Gyapata on November 28, 2015, but the money he gave to Bishop Obinim was in June this year.

The CID PRO told Joy News' Dzifa Bampoh on Newsnite that the complainant has not lodged a complaint against Okomfo Gyapata as yet but if it becomes necessary that they have to involve him they would do so.

"We have just commerce investigation into this issue, when we finish we will hand him over to Domestic Violence Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) to investigate the domestic violence issue," ASP Darkwa said.

The congression waiting for him to lead service at the Tema Community 9 branch were disappointed as the junior pastors throng the police station and they registered their disappointment upon seeing him handcuffed into a police car to be transferred to Accra, Joy News reports.

Edo 2016: Ize-Iyamu Alerts International Community, CSOs Over Illegal Detention Of PDP Members

The Edo State PDP governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu has alerted the international community and the civil society groups over the use of the Edo State Ministry of Justices and the security agencies to intimidate, harass and detain members of PDP, ahead of the September 10 governorship election.

He also warned against the rigging of the election, insisting that the consequence of manipulating the election in favour of APC would be too grave to manage.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu stated this during his interactive session with members of the civil society coalition in Benin-City, the Edo State capital weekend.

‘’The worst is happening now in Edo State; the APC is using the Edo State Ministry of Justice to oppress, intimidate and detain our people. I don’t know whether many of you know what played out recently in Ovia East local government area? The trend has become very alarming’’, the PDP candidate stated.

‘’Our boys are provoked by thugs and miscreants of the APC and before you know it, the same thugs will invite the police and innocent people are arrested; they are denied bail and when the agitation for bail becomes very pronounced, the police men decide to wash their hands off; it is because they know there is nothing in it. They will say it is assault, and disturbance of peace.

‘’And as they get to the Magistrate court, the Ministry of Justices will set in and say it is interested, And on their own will change the charge sheet and say the case is an attempted murder — just to ensure that the Magistrate Court has no jurisdiction over the matter and the Magistrate Court has no option than to say since I have no jurisdiction, I detain YOU until the Director of Public Prosecution decides to handle the matter.’’

The candidate said that many innocent PDP members are current languishing in many police stations, especially the Sapele Road Police Station, saying that their offence is because they were attacked by APC’s thugs, and later arrested by the police, while pasting posters.

He added: ‘’Funny enough, the youths are now in detention because the Commissioner for Justice has decided to misuse his office and told the police to put charges on the innocent PDP members, knowing that the Magistrate Court that has no jurisdiction, will be forced to detain the innocent people.’’

Advising the international community and the civil society groups to speak out now, Pastor Ize-Iyamu reminded them that an injury to one is an injury to all, saying if the situation is allowed to continue, it would amount to inviting anarchy.

He said if the situation is not immediately checked, it will get to a stage where members of the PDP will no longer respect the police, and the people would begin to protect themselves.

Pastor Ize-Iyamu added, ‘’I want to appeal to the international community and leaders of the civil society group to call the Edo State government to order. The APC today came in when the PDP was in government at the federal level. If former President Goodluck Jonathan had decided to use INEC, police and other security agencies, I am sure the story will have been different today.

‘’The Edo State Broadcasting Service, under the regulation of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has a right to report me as a candidate in this election. But it has never done so. The Nigeria Television Authority (NTA) on its own wrote me a letter, assigning a crew to me, because it is a regulation under the NBC.’’

Pastor Ize-Iyamu condemned the unprofessional conduct of the EBS, adding that the moment candidates emerge, all the candidates must be given adequate coverage in line with the regulation of NBC.

‘’The EBS knows it, and the management wanted to do the right thing, but they are afraid. Even when they carry my advert — jingo, they are called to Government House and warned never to try it again. It is that bad!’’, he further stated.

‘’Many civil servants call me in the middle of the night because they are afraid; even when by chance they meet me in public functions, it could get them dismissed from the public offices. What kind of state are we living in? Are we in a state of war? That people who got to power — through our mandate have become despots, using the state apparatus to intimidate and oppress our people?

‘’I appeal to you to take a walk to prisons and you will be amazed at the number of political prisoners that are there. And they are boasting they will do more. And those who were arrested in Ovia North East and detained were told they could be released if only they will defect to APC, and the young boys said they will not, and so they are still in detention till today.’’

The PDP governorship candidate appealed to the international community and the civil society groups to rise up to the challenges, insisting that members of PDP are not weak but love peace because war is expensive.

‘’This election cannot be rigged. We will defend our votes and our people’s mandate with our blood. And those who want to kill let them kill, but life/death is not in their hands’’, he stated.

Do You Know How Many Times Shekau Has Been Killed? – BBC Mocks Nigerian Army Over Latest Claim on Shekau

This Story is translated from the Hausa service of the BBC News:
The Nigerian Army has issued a statement that the Boko Haram, Leader Abubakar Shekau, was seriously injured on Friday, but do you know how many times he was reported dead?

In 2009, the Nigerian military announced the death of the leader of Boko Haram, but less than a year, Shekau appeared in a video.

In 2013, the Joint Task Force said its troops shot Shekau and seriously injured him, the situation that made his followers to cross him to the border town of Amchide in Cameroon.

JTF spokesman at that time, Colonel Sagir Musa, said they got security report that shows Shekau died between 25 July to 3 August 2013.

However, on August 13 and Shekau appeared in a new video, but the JTF denounced the video that it is fabricated.

Also in 2014 Nigerian troops have claimed the head of the Boko Haram died in a gun battle in the town of Konduga in Borno state.

In this case, not until lately, in early October 2014 and Shekau released a video again denied been killed.

A Nigerian army claimed it has long ago killed Shekau, but the name of the leader of Boko Haram is being used.

Already, experts have began commenting on the statement that the leader of Boko Haram has been wounded released by the military.

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has ordered the return of the 15-year-old girl, Uzoamaka Chukwu, who was stripped and tortured early this month by some people in Uburu, Ohaozara Local Government Area.

Umahi, who gave the order on Sunday when he visited the family of the teenager at Umunaga Uburu, said her return would enable state government take full responsibility of her rehabilitation & training.

Although Uzoamaka was last week reportedly taken custody of by an Ebonyi State-born Port-Harcourt-based businesswoman, Ms Rita Nnenna Anoh, Umahi said she must return within seven days or be declared wanted because she remained a property of state.

Umahi, in a statement on Sunday night by his Chief Press Secretary, Emma Anya, said, "Government is asking that wherever she is, she should come back so that we can take over her training from secondary school to university level. We will also be able to rehabilitate her.

“ We are giving seven days for her to come back. We don’t know where she is but we ask that she must return because she is the property of the state.”

The governor, who also promised to improve the welfare of the girls family, reiterated his administration’s willingness to see that justice was done. He added,

"The matter is before a competent court; ,so we may not say much but on what we saw,we felt very bad as a people,as government and as brothers and sisters of Uzoamaka. "We feel that is a gross violation of her right and man’s inhumanity to man. "So we are very sad about it and that is why I directed that all of us should come to take over the responsibility of the girl.”

Umahi said what government was doing was in no way going to stop the case in court, stressing that the case in court will continue to run its course.

“The government’s intervention would not disrupt justice in the case, as we would ensure that such incident does not repeat itself while thanking the family for its belief in the government’s ability to handle the issue. The case in court will continue to run its course and justice must also be done in that direction," he emphasised.

Responding, Elder Francis Odabe, who responded on behalf of the family, appreciated Governor Umahi as a passionate leader. He said,

"We know you are a charitable son of the soil and we know that even if you had not been a governor, you would have still come to sympathise with us. You would have still shown concern because we know you for that. "

Odabe promised on behalf of the family to do everything possible to ensure that Uzoamaka was brought back home within the seven days given by the governor. The governor made the visit in company with some members of the state Executive Council and political stakeholders from old Ohaozara LGA.

Bag Of Rice Now Cost More Than Our Minimum Wage – NLC

Chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Anambra State beanch, Jerry Nnubia, lamented this morning over the economic situation of the country saying a bag of rice now cost more the N18,000 being paid to them as minimum wage.

The labour leader wants to know why workers should be victims of an economic downturn when they are not remembered in times of economic prosperity.

Speaking at a rally in solidarity with Nasarawa workers who were allegedly brutalised by the police while protesting the reduction of their wages by the state government on July 29, he said that any governor who could not pay salaries should resign.

He said, “Why should workers be victims of every economic doom? When we have economic boom nobody remembers workers,” he said.

“Our position is that any governor that can’t pay workers’ salaries should resign. Why haven’t the governors sliced their wages and those of their aides?

“We are here today to show solidarity with our members in Nasarawa state who were killed and injured by overzealous policemen at the gate of government house, Nasarawa for opposing a slice in their salary by the state governor, Tanko Al-Makura.”

The Anambra NLC chairman said it was laughable that salary paid when a bag of rice was sold for N9, 000 is the same salary being paid now that the price a bag of rice has risen to N23,000.
“A bag of rice today is N23,000 or more and their minimum wage is N18,000. This is laughable,” he said.
